In an effort to help spark local interest in business-to-business opportunities in the renewable energy industry, the Missouri Partnership will host a wind energy workshop on May 12th in Kansas City. This is the second in a series of the Missouri Partnership’s statewide workshops aimed at helping Missouri companies learn how to enter the wind energy industry supply chain. The Great Lakes WIND Network, an industry-based network of manufacturers and suppliers, will lead the discussion. The workshop will run from 8 a.m. – noon at the Metropolitan Community College Business & Technology Campus.

The workshop features a half-day orientation aimed at Kansas City manufacturers considering involvement in the wind-energy supply chain. Companies that may benefit from attending this event range from machine shops, to foundries, to manufacturers of supplemental equipment, including, ladders, elevators, and hoists. More information on basic supplier categories can be found here. The workshop will help Kansas City companies discover how to diversify into the fast-growing wind industry.
Experts in the field of renewable energy will highlight market opportunities in the wind sector for attending manufacturers and connect them with potential customers. The goal of the workshop is to help build a new industry of wind turbine components that will create new jobs and investments throughout Kansas City.
The workshop will also feature information on growing trends in wind power, major supply chain needs in the wind energy systems industry, retooling investments, and process upgrades that suppliers must address in order comply with wind industry standards. Economic development resources will also be available to help prospective suppliers expand in Kansas City.

Stimulus Money Helps Local Businesses Give Work Experience to Summer Interns

One of the initial “job stimulating” aspects of the stimulus program will be a summer internship program that was announced this past week by Governor Nixon.

The program provides “real life” job experience for persons between the ages of 16 and 24 and will pay the full cost of those wages ($8 per hour) between May 1st and September 30th.  In Independence, we have over 15,000 residents who fall within this age range so the pool to choose from can potentially be very large and, as a business owner, you have the ability to screen, interview and select your preferred candidate for your intern position.

For more information on the program and applications to participate, you can go to http://transform.mo.gov/summerjobs/ or call (800) 592-6020.  ICED can also assist with the application process.  Just give our office a call at (816) 252-5777.

The former Circuit City at 18701 E. 39th St. in Independence, MO, was sold in at auction after the former owner, CC Independence LLC, defaulted on the loan and was foreclosed upon. Bank of America, a trustee on behalf of the lender, GMAC Commercial Mortgage Securities, made the winning bid of $1.3 million, or approximately $40 per square foot.

The 32,770-square-foot general retail building has been vacant since Circuit City closed its doors in the fourth quarter of last year. The building was constructed in 1994 in the East Jackson County submarket.
